The African Legacy - Dangerous and Plains Game Hunting Safari Adventure
The unique, remote, and challenging nature of an African safari hunt
The variety of game that can be hunted in Africa is incredibly vast, ranging from the continent’s largest mammals to small, elusive antelope. Hunting opportunities are typically categorized into two main groups: Dangerous Game and Plains Game.
Here’s a little more about Off The Track.
We’re a Zimbabwe-based DMC made up of a small team of travel enthusiasts who know and love this country inside and out. Our strength lies in crafting entirely tailor-made safari experiences across Zimbabwe, with each itinerary built from the ground up to suit the specific needs and style of every guest. Nothing we do is off-the-shelf.
Zimbabwe offers such incredible diversity, and we take pride in making the logistics seamless and the journeys unforgettable. From the iconic landscapes of Mana Pools, where guests can track game on foot or paddle quietly along the Zambezi, to the vast elephant-rich plains of Hwange National Park, each destination offers its own unique rhythm and atmosphere.
We work across all key safari regions, including the shores of Lake Kariba, the rolling granite hills of Matobo, the wild and remote beauty of Gonarezhou, and the stunning private reserves tucked into the country’s far corners. Whether it’s a classic safari circuit or something more off the beaten track, we know the areas intimately and only recommend properties and experiences we truly believe in.
We also coordinate air access with Mack Air, making it easy to connect Victoria Falls, Kariba, Hwange, Mana Pools, and beyond – especially during the main safari season when timing and routing matter most.
Because we’re based here and travel often, we’re able to keep a close eye on what’s new, what’s changing, and what’s working really well. We love pairing iconic destinations with hidden gems and are always happy to offer suggestions or inspiration to help shape the perfect trip.

Plains Game: The Challenge of the Stalk
Plains Game offers the purest and most rewarding hunting challenge in Africa. This diverse category features over two dozen magnificent species, including the elusive Kudu, giant Eland, majestic Gemsbok, and agile Impala. It calls for high-level tracking skill to find miniature trophies like the Blue Duiker and Steenbok, while specialized hunts for predators like the Caracal and Jackal add diverse excitement to any African safari.

Hunting Adventures
The Kudu: Africa's Signature Plains Game Trophy
The Kudu’s breathtaking, spiraling horns make it perhaps the most spectacular plains game trophy in Africa, a sight every hunter dreams of.
As a popular and relatively common species, it’s a must-have on any African safari, particularly for first-time visitors.
The Sable: Africa's Prince of Antelopes
The Sable Antelope is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most magnificent and non-negotiable plains game trophies, defined by the bull’s striking jet-black coat and spectacular, ridged horns that sweep dramatically backward, often exceeding 40 inches.
Known for their extreme caution and alertness (earning the nickname “Black Ghost”), hunting the Sable is a challenging and rewarding experience typically conducted via the spot-and-stalk method in the light woodlands and savanna near water sources.
Securing this iconic trophy requires patience and skill, making it a powerful centerpiece for any hunter’s African collection.
Hunting the Blue & Black Wildebeest
The Wildebeest (or “Poor Man’s Buffalo”) is a classic, resilient plains game trophy. Hunting this herd animal requires a challenging spot-and-stalk approach due to its keen senses. Success demands precise, low shot placement as the Wildebeest is exceptionally tough and can be dangerous if wounded.
It is a common species available year-round, offering a rewarding test of stalking and accuracy.
Hunting the largest land animal on earth
Elephant hunting expeditions in Zimbabwe are rigorously regulated and specialized, requiring both special government permits and the mandatory guidance of a Licensed Professional Hunter. This strict oversight ensures that all trips adhere to local wildlife laws and ethical hunting practices.
